The Forestry Research Area in Liliental

The Poplars

Poplars can be found everywhere in the research area, either in groups or as single individuals. These trees are the remnants of a former pioneer wood, which was aimed at protecting the frost and sun-sensitive research plants after the FVA had taken over the site at the end of the 1950s. Since then, the many experimental areas, the arboretum and seed orchards have developed such that the poplar wood could be removed from many large areas. The poplars in the valley of Mühlental however stem from real poplar experiments that have played an important role in the former plant cultivation programme.
